Coding for Social Solutions in Costa Rica: Bluemix Hackathon
33 teams participated in the Hackathon in Costa Rica intent on creating social solutions. Utilizing IBM Bluemix, anyone with a laptop and an internet connection can use cloud and compete. This enables IBM Costa Rica to become a global innovation hub without having to build out expensive infrastructure.
Desarrollando América Latina
Ana Helena Chacón Echeverría, Vice President of Costa Rica, kicked off the event with a call-to-action rallying coders to create humanitarian and governance solutions: Government Bluemix Hackathon for DAL —Desarrollando América Latina “Developing Latin America”.
Also in attendance were Costa Rican government ministers from Education, Justice, Peace, and Housing and Urban Development.
Solutions for a Smarter Planet
With nearly 240 IBMers, including special guests from the US, Brazil, Mexico and Chile were on hand to participate in the Hackathon kickoff, ideation sessions, cloud technology presentations and tutorials. The winning team of three coders created their app in 36 hours from concept to completion. The “Roomix” app provides automation of corporate campus conference facility reservations. Other Bluemix apps to make the winner’s circle include solutions to:
- monitor emission levels within vehicles
- sensor mudslides in high-risk geographies during monsoon
- coordinate local animal rescue efforts
